wondering how processing is like. And how long does it take??

And do we recieve another Eye and Hearing Exam?? or do they just use our records from MEPS?? i can understand if they give us another eye exam for the glasses... but wouldnt it be a waste of time to give another hearing exam.. i mean if you pass 1 hearing test.. you basically pass em all until your at a very old age

Honestly, I doubt the Drill Instructors care if it's a waste of time in your opinion ;) but that's just me.

I'm not sure, but it seems like we did have another hearing test, and that staying awake for it was almost impossible since we hadn't slept since we got there. But, I could be totally wrong about that.

Anyway, you'll spend a few days in receiving getting a things ready for ou to begin training. You'll become a human pin cushion, you will learn some basic drill, you will get all of your gear, and you will learn the basics about being a recruit. Nothing major, the real fun doesn't begin until you get to your platoon.

a complete medical and dental exam. Once you have cleared all of this then you can begin training.

You'll only do another eye exam if you need corrective lenses. After that they'll give you these huge plastic dinnerplates with arms poking out of them called "glasses" that pinch the **** out of your nose, and squeeze your brain out the top of your head.

Here is how I remember processing:
I got to Parris Island in a van. The van door opened up and the Drill Instructor said to get out of the van and stand on the yellow footprints. While we stood on the footprints, he went over the basics such as no more personal pronouns, and the last word out of our mouths would be sir. Then he orders you into the building, through the silver hatches, and you go in and line up against the desk. Then you pass up your paperwork, and you are ordered through the hatch right in front of you. Then, you are ordered to make your phone call home to tell your parents you got there ok. Then you are ordered to line up infront of a small box type thing, and the DI looks at your feet. Then after your feet have been looked at, you go into a classroom, and things stop being exciting.

PerXes

At this point you'll fill out tons and tons and tons of paperwork. It's going to suck because you have to sit perfectly, and you can't fall asleep, and you'll get harassed for having to make a headcall. Plus, you'll have to deal with this jerk civilian who acts like a DI, but isn't one, so it all seems stupid. From here you'll go get your hair cut in the same building you're in..this will include a long time of standing around. After that you'll go over and get your clothing issue, and other gear-type issue(toothpaste, toothbrush, stuff like this), and tennis shoes. This will take a very long time, and you'll be hot and tired..you'll probably get boxed chow during this. After all this is over, you'll be taken up to a squadbay in the building you're in, and you'll proceed to sit around. You'll sit there and fall asleep, and then a DI will come in and check on you and you'll wake up. This will repeat for a long time. Eventually the DI will come out and tell you to get on the yellow footprints, and organize yourselves by height, or some other way. You'll suck at doing it though, because you're a first day recruit. He'll then step you out around and you'll get your rifle, and gear, do medical and dental, and do other things that you need to do. Finally, you'll go to your future squadbay and get some sleep, and hygiene. You'll walk around doing stuff until that Saturday morning. On Saturday morning you'll run the IST. After the IST y ou meet your Drill Instructors. Have fun!

Honey you're going to do a lot of stuff that seems like a waste of time to YOU - but, nobody cares what YOU think about how your time is being spent. Keep your pie hole shut - you're going to have nothing but time at Parris Island. "Killing time" teaches you patience.

oo sounds... whats the word im looking for. Awkward. I guess thats probably the best part about boot camp. The only thing i have to worry about is the foot thingy. Cause at MEPS they put i was like a semi- flat footed or something but it was acceptable... and I didnt get DQ'd for it... so i assume if i didnt get DQ'd for it at MEPS.. there wouldnt be a problem if at the Island.. right?

PerXes

Nope..he might just write something on your hand and you'll get insoles.

Shouldn't be if you made it through MEPS - guess you'll find out when you start being on them a lot (cause there will be times when they're gonna hurt).

Do you strip down in your boxers and do the all the movements that you do at MEPS? Or is just a full physical like you would get from a civilian doc? Just curious.

I have the flattest feet in the world, and at meps they documented it as such but didn't DQ me or even mention it. They just circled that I had it.

I've never had any problems running/walking/marching/hiking...

I shouldn't have anything to worry about, should I? (i.e. not being allowed to train?)

It costs money to put you through MEPS get you to MEPS and Ship you to P.I.

With the ease they DQ people at MEPS, I'm almost certain that if you weren't trainable MEPS docs would've sent you home and not given you the green light.

No, you'll stay clothed. All they do in medical is shoot you with needles. What they do is, you walk in, and you get one in either arm at the same time, then another one in your tricep. You'll do this 1 or 2 more times throughout training. Dental is just getting examined by a dentist and taking X-Rays.

No, nothing to worry about.

They look at your feet to decide if you need special insoles or inserts for your boots. They may also issue you a different type of running shoe if it is a real problem and the 'normal' shoe won't work for you. Of course, they select a shoe that works for the most people possible, so chances are that won't be an issue for you.

Alright, people in here need to start reading all of the posts before they open their sucks. This is the second time that I've said something, and then someone asked a question I answered right after I said it. Your DI's won't be as charitable as I am when you don't listen.

I repeat, in reference to your first trip to medical, "All they do in medical is shoot you with needles. What they do is, you walk in, and you get one in either arm at the same time, then another one in your tricep. You'll do this 1 or 2 more times throughout training."

No, he meant X-Rays of the mouth, that's to see if you have any cavities or if your wisdom teeth are ready to be yanked, I'm assuming.

Echo_Four_Bravo

I don't know if that is what he is talking about, but you will have dental x-rays taken. There is a chance that they may be used to identify you at some point. And, they do need to see if you need dental work taken.

In between you getting your awesome new go-fasters and that eye exam is you also get your 3 sets of cammies, Jungle boots and ICBs, covers, and everything else you will wear. And also a laundry bag of items such as Brasso, Gain, etc. And paperwork for every item you are issued. Enjoy those sleepless few days and the Box Chows. You'll probably get the female chows like every single person in receiving seems to always get. Not bad though, they come with a granola bar. :)

its a waste of time in my opinion.

Poolees and recruits until you have the Eagle,Globe and Anchor the Marine Corps really doesn't care about your opinion. They have been doing just fine for over 231 years! You have to wait until you get out or retired and post on websites like this before your opinion may count.

There will be many things that you as an individual will think that are a waste of time. However in the Marine Corps you will no longer be an individual! Collectively and as a whole Marine Corps they are done for a reason. If you go to MEPS are tested, poked and prodded and pass the physical and testings that's good.

Then you go to a depot and your circumstances may
change. Examples..eyes,teeth,hearing,blood and maybe that going away present from the town rotten crotch. It's to cover your azz the Marine Corps, the government and the concerned mothers and families.

It may seem trivial and sometimes stupid and a waste, but just do as you are told like the hundreds of thousands before you and you'll do fine.

I am only answering this because it was asked, and it is the first time I have seen a poolee ask it, even if he/she was kidding...When you are issued your rifle in boot camp, your platoon will be taken to the armory, where the armorer will pass a rifle through the window...your Drill Instructor will read off the serial number of the rifle to the armorer, the rifle will be handed to whoever is next in line, that recruit will read back the serial number for clarification, that rifle will then be assigned to your name, and you will be escorted outside with the rest of the platoon...you are not allowed to trade rifles with anyone, nor are you allowed to swap parts of your rifle with other recruits. Your rifle is your rifle, and it had better be in outstanding condition when you turn it back in. Back in '83 when I was in boot, a recruit gave his rifle to someone, he never knew who, while ascending Mount MF'er...the rifle was never recovered, and that recruit caught all kinds of hell for it...he may even be out of prison by now, I'm not sure....

And why do they always want to know EXACTLY what's going to happen to them - like their routine is going to be thrown out of whack or something?

Everything that you are now will be NO MORE once you hit either MCRD - you won't even recognize yourself.

And you could get lucky like me when I checked into El Toro - my rack # for my rifle was 666 - needless to say I didn't hit squat with it and they wouldn't let me give it back to them.

No wonder drill instructors are so angry...

All I've ever been told is "Listen carefully, and do what you are told. Boot camp will go by remarkably easier if you do."

But apparently alot of people are having trouble with the first part!

YLDNDN6

Marine84....and what about the ones who are trying to "squeeze" boot camp into their schedules...i.e. will it be over in time for fall semester or spring prom or whatever...you either have to want it badly enough to forsake everything else in life for it, or you don't want it...seems pretty simple to me...maybe values have changed a bit since we were in...
