The “Moonlighters” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 332 will stand down April 1, leaving Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C.-based Marine Aircraft Group 31 with only six F/A-18 Hornet squadrons, according to a March 23 air station release.

The squadron is being transferred to “cadre” status, meaning its 12 aircraft and 200 personnel will be temporarily redistributed throughout the Corps until the unit can switch to F-35B Joint Strike Fighters, which are slated to replace the service’s Hornets under last year’s Marine Aviation Plan, according to the release.

The only other Hornet squadron scheduled for cadre status this year is based at MCAS Miramar, Calif., according to the release.

Miramar officials identified that squadron as Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 134, a Reserve unit headquartered there, but said no firm date has been set for its transition.
