NEW ORLEANS The newly commissioned U-S-S New Orleans, which was docked for the past week near the French Quarter, didn't leave for Pascagoula as planned because of labor disputes with Mississippi shipyard workers.
With no resolution in sight to the strike at Northrop Grumman's Pascagoula shipyard, where the ship was headed for a fresh coat of paint and other work, the U-S-S New Orleans was moved to the Navy base in Algiers.Navy Commander Jane Campbell says the ship will remain in Algiers indefinitely. The ship had been under construction at Northrop Grumman's Avondale shipyard for the past five years. Work was completed on March 5th, and the ship was scheduled to head to Pascagoula yesterday before eventually heading to its base port in San Diego.Northrop Grumman employees at plants in Gulfport, Mississippi, Avondale and Tallulah, Louisiana, approved their new labor agreements last week. The U-S-S New Orleans, L-P-D-18, is the second in the San Antonio class of amphibious assault ships designed to carry as many as 800 Marines, their vehicles and helicopters in times such as war.The Navy commissioned the ship before thousands of onlookers Saturday in New Orleans, marking the first time since at least World War Two that a Navy ship has been built and commissioned in its namesake city.
