The Commission on the Future for America’s Veterans will hold an unusual “town meeting” Wednesday in Tampa, Fla., that will be accessible over the Internet.

A Webcast of the meeting, which will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern time and last about two hours, will be available at the commission’s Web site. Instructions on how to participate are posted on the main page. Participants will have to log in, using a code on the site.

Participants are supposed to be able to hear and see everything available to those who are physically present at the Tampa meeting and will have the opportunity to comment and ask questions, said Harry Walters, a former Veterans Administration chief who is the managing commissioner.

While the commission is looking over the horizon at veterans’ benefits and medical care needs, Walters said he expects the current controversy over treatment of wounded Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans will be discussed.

“The shocking stories about living conditions for many of our wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center bring home the problems that can occur when a health system is strained to the breaking point,” Walters said. “With a looming budget crisis facing the Department of Veterans Affairs and other federal programs, it is absolutely imperative that we begin planning today to ensure that our future veterans get the treatment they deserve.”

The commission, created by a coalition that includes the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America and AmVets, hopes to have a final report by Memorial Day 2008 containing recommendations on veterans’ programs
