Soldiers 'abused' over war role

AUSTRALIAN soldiers have been urged not to wear their uniforms in public to avoid abuse prompted by the prospect of war in Iraq, it has been claimed.

Liberal MP for Herbert, Peter Lindsay, whose north Queensland seat includes military facilities, today said anti-war protests had led to soldiers being verbally abused.

"People are openly critical, basically calling them warmongers and so there is an excitable group in the community who are passionate about that," he told ABC radio.

Michael O'Connor, from the Australian Defence Association, said some troops had been advised not to wear their uniforms in public.

Mr O'Connor said the verbal abuse could escalate if war was declared.

"There are all kinds of low class slime who are trying and will continue to try to wreck this country from the inside. Most of them don't know it, but they are actually working for the Russians. Some of them do know it, though. It doesn't matter whether they call themselves communists, socialists, or just plain liberals. That is what they are doing." - Gen. George S. Patton, Jr.
