Navy to hold Equal Opportunity conference

The Navy is strongly encouraging military and civilian equal opportunity advisers who are not forward deployed to attend an Equal Opportunity and Equal Employment Opportunity conference this month.

Funding for attendance will be the responsibility of individual commands, according to a Navy announcement released last month.

The conference will be held March 19-22 at the Virginia Beach Hilton in Virginia Beach, Va.

Judy Scott, EEO civilian program manager for the Department of the Navy, said the conference would provide an opportunity to teach sailors, Marines and civilian employees about the differences between military and civilian equal opportunity programs.

“We can help people to better understand what roles and responsibilities are,” Scott said. “We have a lot of total force offices where military personnel and civilians are going to be working together. This gives them an opportunity to understand differences in the programs,” she said, noting that military and civilian programs are authorized by different laws and have different claims processes. But Scott said both civilian and military programs worked toward the same basic goal.

“We are all looking to see that we have a diverse, high-performing work force,” she said. “This is a part of that. It’s the same church, but there are different pews within it.”
