Thousands of American troops have been called up for a possible war with Iraq.

Nathan Johnson, 22, of Lee's Summit, is among them.

Johnson shipped out on active duty in early January. He is enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Karen Holloway-Todd, Johnson's mother, has been communicating with her son via e-mail.

Holloway-Todd says she is "petrified" for her son's well-being.

"I don't want my son to go to war, but I'm glad he's protecting my freedom," she said.

Johnson's mother says that when she sees antiwar protesters, she thinks people should back the troops.

Johnson said she believes the United States should go to war, but hopes that it will be over quickly.

Holloway-Todd said all she knows about her son's whereabouts is that he is in training in Kuwait.

Johnson is expected to be away from home for at least a year.
