Military families and supporters in Move Forward America speak at Griffith Park en route to a rally next weekend in Washington, D.C.

Kyle Crowley, an 18-year-old Marine, died in Iraq nearly three years ago. Stricken by stress and grief, his father, Mark Crowley, suffered a near-fatal heart attack about 17 months later, on the fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The elder Crowley, now 48, a sheet metal worker from the Northern California town of Tracy, wasn't healthy enough to return to work. He's been searching for meaning in his life ever since.

The one thing he's sure of, however, is that he doesn't want his son's life to have been lost in vain. That's why he joined a cross-country caravan of military families and supporters urging the U.S. to support the troops and criticizing politicians and antiwar activists for calling for troop withdrawal from Iraq before the job is done.

"Many have died for these colors," Crowley told supporters at Griffith Park on Friday as he held a U.S. flag. "If you don't support these colors, get the hell out."

The Los Angeles stop was one of two dozen rallies Crowley and others in the Move America Forward caravan will hold as they make their way to Washington, D.C., over the next eight days under the motto "These colors don't run."

About 100 supporters — including many veterans — added several dozen flags of all sizes to the caravan's collection, which the group plans to display in "a giant flag city of red, white and blue patriotism" on the National Mall next weekend.

Move America Forward is protesting the antiwar rallies planned for the fourth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The caravan includes two other California parents — Debra Argel Bastian of Lompoc, whose son died in Iraq, and Debbie Johns of Granite Bay, whose son is serving his third tour there.

In essence, they are part of the caravan's anti-Cindy Sheehan movement. They are trying to show the counterpoint to the growing public opposition to the war.

"Cindy Sheehan is yesterday's news," said Bastian, whose son, Capt. Derek Argel, a graduate of the Air Force Academy, was killed on Memorial Day 2005. Bastian and Johns say they honor the commitment and sacrifice of Sheehan's son, Casey, who was killed in Iraq, but deplore the way his mother has acted — camping outside the White House and President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, to protest.

The parents contend that partisan politics is hurting the military's efforts in Iraq. They denounced House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) as an "armchair general."

Crowley said his 24-year-old daughter disagrees with him about the war. But in his view, it's us or them. "If we don't finish it, they will. If we pull out or can't win, [the terrorists] will make Sept. 11 look like a bar fight. They're radical, and their only meaning is killing innocent people."

A former Army ranger, Crowley said he could shoot an elk at 600 yards with a single shot. He wishes he could trade his own life for his son's — or any of the other 3,000-plus troops who have died.

Kyle had a twin brother who died at 4 months, a victim of crib death. Crowley and Kyle's mother divorced while he was in college, and he raised Kyle mostly alone. "So God has given me two, and taken both back," Crowley said.

I knew Mr Crowley's son LCpl Kyle Crowley and LCpl Travis Layfield they both died together in an ambush on August 6, 2004 while serving with 2/4 1st MARDIV. I knew them when they were Poolees Kyle out of RSS San Ramon and Travis out of RSS Fremont and sadly I attended both of their memorial services. Kyles Dad has truly amazed me during this Gathering Of Eagles. Kyle Im sure is looking down from his post with great pride. I will post some more photos of the caravan below as we are well represented with Marines.

Some decorations on caravan cars.

A liberal anti-war dude showed up earlier, grabbed a flier and then took off when the caravan came. I was out on the driveway taking pictures. He held out his hand through his car window to give me a high five as he drove by. "Hey, brother, stop the war, right?" he whined as he gave a limp wristed slap to my hand. "Only if you want to be killed by terrorists," I retorted, watching him speed off. Looks like he'll be very excited to tell his moonbat friends about this: The Gathering of Eagles Tucson! Stay tuned for that notification later!

Jim and Sheila looking good! Those two young men above the sign will be Marines this time next year. The guy on the right is a little tired from a recruit hike earlier! Later I talked to Jim for a while and opined that while his incredible website FreeRepublic.com has done great work, liberal media bias is not defeated yet and there is still much to be done. He told me had no idea Free Republic would grow to it's present gigantic size when he started it! I also met Syncro and Impeach98 on the caravan and dlfromthedesert, a Tucson FReeper.

We have an outstanding update from the Move America Forward staff on the road with the "These Colors Don't Run" caravan.

We're writing this at 1:25 AM from Midland, Texas, after having been escorted through Central Texas by law enforcement. The caravan followed the escort into the Monahans, Texas pro-troop rally where the city's fire trucks were lined up with their lights and sirens on. People lined the street, waving their flags. It was incredible. We've had so many unforgettable experiences where the American people have taken the time to turn out and speak out in support of our troops, our veterans and our fallen heroes.

Over 5,000 American flags have been donated to our caravan in just the first three days of the caravan - it's simply unbelievable.

Now we have one concern: we aren't sure if we've done a good enough job getting the message out for our upcoming stops. We're doing the best we can, working morning, noon and night - we wake up at 6:00 AM or so and go to bed usually around 2:00 AM... and then we spend all day on the road and conducting pro-troop rallies.

So can you all please help us make sure that our events in Dallas, Little Rock, Memphis and Atlanta are a big success? It doesn't matter where you live in the nation, please contact people who support our troops in those areas. Either contact friends or family members, or go online and look up contact information for groups that you think might help get some of their members out. Can you please help us? We've had such an amazing first four days, and we're determined to make the upcoming events even greater successes.

Complete information on our itinerary and route can be found here: http://www.MoveAmericaForward.org

'These Colors Don't Run' to hold counterprotest

By Eric Pfeiffer
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
March 13, 2007

A caravan of military family members is driving cross-country to show their continuing support for the troops, culminating in a large pro-troop rally in Washington this weekend.
Calling their effort "These Colors Don't Run," the series of rallies, which was organized by the Move America Forward organization, is making 25 stops before arriving at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Saturday.
"Some politicians don't seem to have the will and fortitude to stand behind our troops when they need us most, and that saddens me," said Deborah Johns, whose son, William, is serving his third tour of duty in Iraq with the Marines.
Members of the caravan say they have collected more than 5,000 U.S. flags since their trip began. The group plans to simultaneously display the flags during the rally, creating what they call a "giant flag city" on the National Mall. Afterward, the flags will be mailed to military service members in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Some of the other groups joining the rally say they have another mission: Protecting the Vietnam memorial from anti-war protesters who will also be marching on the Mall that same day.
"We do not want, nor will we tolerate, a repeat of what happened at the U.S. Capitol," read a statement from Rolling Thunder, a war veterans support organization.
During a January anti-war protest near the Capitol, some anti-war demonstrators spray-painted slogans on the Capitol Steps.
Move America Forward organizer Robert Dixon said the caravan has been well-received during the cross-country road trip.
"There have been a couple hundred people at each stop and more people joining the caravan in each city," he said.
Joseph Williams, whose son, Lance Cpl. Michael Jason Williams, was killed in Iraq in March 2003, said he joined the caravan to support the troops and the continuing mission in Iraq.
"I think the troops have a lot more support today than when I was in Vietnam," Mr. Williams said. "The majority of people are very supportive."
Mr. Williams said he thinks President Bush will resist the urge to withdraw American forces from Iraq despite growing public impatience with the war. "I think he'll see it through. He doesn't seem to be caving in to the pressure."
Another caravan participant said the group wants "to remind people that it's not about the cost of war, it's about the cost of freedom."
Deborah Argel Bastian's son, Air Force Capt. Derek Argel, was killed in Iraq during his second tour of duty on Memorial Day in 2005.
In addition to supporting the troops, Mrs. Bastian said the trip has been beneficial for her because of the opportunity it provides to bond with other military family members who have lost loved ones in the war.
"It's a trip I've really wanted to go on," she said.
