Hello all. I recently posted a poll about Presidential Guard. Since then, I've been really thinking about it and do not want try for Presidential Guard even though I qualify. I dont want go be infantry after my term for Presidential Guard. I've been thinking about going MP considering my background and previous work history with law enforcement. My question is what are the chances that i'll get MP and not Corrections Specialist. If chances are not good then how long before I can do a Lat move? Thanks.

The chances are pretty good you will get 5811 (MP), But if by chance you get Brig rat duty, your probably gonna be stuck there, just talk to your recruiter.

I've talked to my recruiter and he has said pretty much the same thing you did. How long before I can lat move?

Usually when you reenlist, and then it isn't a promise that you can lat move into the MOS you're wanting.

I Thought You got to choose either mp or corrections?

Thats a negative Future. I thought the same thing but was informed by my recruiter that you can qualify for the job field and then the specific job to which you are assigned is due the the needs of the Marine Corps.

You sign up as a 58XX and they put you where you are needed. Same as every other MOS field.

so what are the chances that you will get field and not corrections?

Same answer as E4B posted before you, depends on the need of the Corps. I signed up for MP and I made it pretty clear I did not want Corrections, mabey I just got lucky.

It just depends. If they need brig guards when you finish MCT, that is what you will do. There is no way to look into the future and see what will be needed. I would guess there are more Marines being sent into corrections now than in the past because of the need to keep an eye on those being captured. But, that is just a guess. The only way you can ever know is to enlist and see what happens.

Sorry to bump this.

I read somewhere else that if you manage to get 5811 on your contract that you will not be sent to corrections. I thought it could only go either way if you sign up for 5800.

Is this incorrect?

You will not get 5811 on a contract. You will get 5800

Not at all possible, or just very unlikely? Even with a high ASVAB score?

You get a contract job field (5800), Not a specific specialty (5811). The Corps places you where they need you within that field, MP or Brig Rat. You do not have a choice. Get used to the term..."Need of the Corps".

I understand the needs of the Corp. I was just cross checking against other information that I received, which is apparently bad.

I just graduated from MCRD Paris Island on the 25th. I'm active duty (5 year contract to be an MP). My contract says 5800. I want a field MP job so freaking bad......but like everybodys keeps saying, the needs of the Marine Corps comes first. I would pay money to be a field MP vs. a garrison MP.

One of the kids in my platoon worked in the police force before he came in as a narcotics officer.....his contract already states that he'll be a dog officer.

Another kid in my platoon is a reservist MP, but he was telling me that the unit that he will be with is a field MP unit or something like that so he pretty much knows where he'll be stationed and has an idea of what kind of an MP he will be.

The moral of this story is: In most cases the Corps will put you wherever they need you except for some special situations.

Well I have a question... New to the idea of MP and joining the Marine very soon... What is the Difference between these Field MP's vs. Garrison or Corrections?

Thanks
