A memorial service will be held at 10 this morning at Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County for two Marine recruiters killed in a car accident in Randolph last month.

The service for Sgt. William Pascal, 27, of Newton, and Staff Sgt. Eric Maul, 31, who lived at Picatinny Arsenal, will be held at 10 a.m. at the Francis H. Parker building, 1 Ramsey Ave. on the arsenal's campus in Rockaway Township.

About 400 people -- including the men's families and Marines from around the state -- are expected to attend, said Sgt. Kevin Hayner, a Marine spokesman.

The men were killed Feb. 23 when their government-owned Dodge Stratus veered off winding Franklin Road and struck a tree, authorities said. Three other Marine recruiters, all from the same Rockaway office, were injured.

The driver, Sgt. Nicholas Gendron, who also lives on base, has been released from Morristown Memorial Hospital, Hayner said. Sgt. Glendale Santamaria, of Jersey City, and Sgt. Thomas Sweeney, of Lakeville, Pa., remained in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Their families were keeping vigil at the hospital.

The five Marines were out recruiting young people, traveling on along a twisty, dimly lit stretch of Franklin Road that runs parallel to Route 10, along the Denville-Randolph border, police said.

Speed appeared to be a factor in the 8:35 p.m. crash, police said. The two-lane street has a speed limit of 25 mph in Denville and 35 mph in Randolph.
