Officials Search For Pieces Of Missing Fence

POSTED: 4:39 pm EST March 9, 2007

WASHINGTON -- District officials hope to retrieve hundreds of pieces missing from a 140-year-old wrought iron fence surrounding a historic military hospital.

The fence was erected in 1864 around the old Naval Hospital on Capitol Hill. Officials have made a public plea for the return of pieces that may be in the collections of history buffs, or possibly stored away in attics, basements and garages.

The D.C. Office of Property Management is currently reviewing proposals to preserve and restore the 16,000 square foot antebellum mansion. The building on Pennsylvania Avenue served as a hospital for Union sailors and Marines during the Civil War and was used by the services until 1911.

The missing pieces include wrought-iron stars, decorative trim and spear-like uprights

Officials hope to collect ornamental pieces from the 750-foot fence during the next few weeks.
