MECEP students to run for paralyzed Marine

Two leathernecks in Baton Rouge, La., are running for 24 consecutive hours in a fundraising effort for a Marine who most likely will never run again.

Staff Sgt. Andrew Raymond and Sgt. Steven Rogers — both in the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program and students at Louisiana State University — will begin their 24-hour run around the lakes at LSU at 9 a.m. March 31, according to Staff Sgt. Cheryl Dengler, also in the MECEP program at LSU.

They hope to raise money for Sgt. Corey Petersen, a friend who was paralyzed from the chest down in a snowmobiling accident three months before graduation, Dengler said.

Petersen, an avid runner, joined the Active Reserve soon after Sept. 11, 2001. She was selected for the MECEP program and was slated to graduate from Iowa State University in May, according to Dengler.

Since her Feb. 3 accident, Petersen has had two spinal cord surgeries, and she has feeding tubes that won’t be removed for months, Dengler said.

Her family is “more focused on her injuries” than financial woes at this stage, Raymond said. “The monetary situation they’re going to be in when this is done — I don’t know if they have thought about it or not.”

Raymond decided to raise money for Petersen, a “stellar Marine” he met when they were in MECEP preparatory school together. He and Rogers calculate they will run between 85 and 115 miles by 9 a.m. April 1, but they will “run, walk or crawl” until the end, Raymond said.

The team said they welcome any support during their run; they are also accepting pledges and donations.
