A new scholarship honoring the memory of a Gettysburg Area High School graduate who died while serving with the Marines is on the way to reaching its goal, its co-chairman said.

Stan Clark said he wants to raise $25,000 to fund an annual award for Gettysburg Area High School graduates joining the military or studying for a career in public service, much like 2000 graduate Eric McColley did.

McColley was one of 10 Marines to die Feb. 17 last year when a pair of Marine helicopters crashed off the coast of Africa while conducting counter-terror operations.

McColley earned a number of medals and ribbons while serving in the Marines and was promoted four times in five years, Clark said.

He wouldn't say how much money he had raised so far, but that "everything's going according to plan."

Clark also said he's also working on a presentation ceremony to be performed at graduation that will include Medal of Honor winner, retired Marine Corps Col. Wesley Fox and possibly a representative of McColley's unit.

The amount of the award hasn't been finalized, Clark said – it will be determined by the amount of money collected – but he's committed to offering an award of at least $1,000.

Gettysburg students can apply for the award at the guidance office.

Clark said McColley's parents, Susan and John McColley, will choose the award recipient.
