Preparing for Saturday's commissioning of the USS New Orleans, Marine Corps artillery personnel will practice firing large guns beginning today, the Navy announced, warning residents of periodic loud noise.
The Marines will fire dummy rounds at the Naval Air Station-Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chasse today between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
On Thursday and Friday, the Marines will do their practice firing at Woldenberg Park in New Orleans, where the commissioning ceremony takes place on Saturday. Practice there will be held between 7 and 9 a.m.
The Marines will fire a 19-gun salute during the Saturday ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m.
The rehearsal is controlled with "strict safety precautions in place," according to the Navy.
