Promotions to gunny up this year

The Corps is set to promote 14 percent more staff sergeants to gunnery sergeant this fiscal year as part of a Corps-wide increase in promotion opportunities, according to a manpower spokesman.

The fiscal 2007 gunnery sergeant selection board, which convenes April 17 in Quantico, Va., will select 1,877 staff sergeants for promotion, according to the Feb. 23 Corps-wide message that stated the 60-day zones and allocations for the board. That is up from last year’s 1,650 selections.

The increase in allocations ties into the Bush administration’s initiative to grow the Corps by 22,000 Marines by 2011, according to an e-mail response to questions from Manpower and Reserve Affairs spokesman 1st Lt. Rob Dolan.

Leathernecks “in most [military occupational specialties] and grades will see an increase” in promotion opportunities as the Corps gets closer to its end-strength goal of 202,000 Marines, according to the statement.

While the jump in allocations is related to that goal, retirements, re-enlistments and the number of staff sergeants in each MOS affect allocations for gunnery sergeant.

The first wave of the end-strength increase includes plans to add 9,000 Marines by the end of fiscal 2008, according to the Corps’ Feb. 5 budget request, for an end strength of 189,000 Marines.

Infantry unit leaders received the biggest increase in allocations for gunnery sergeant this year, with 109 more than last year. Ironically, the same MOS felt the biggest pinch last year, when infantry staff sergeants had 145 fewer allocations than in 2005.

Promotions have opened up for administrative chiefs as well, with 106 more chances for promotion than last year.

Combat service support chiefs have 76 allocations for promotion, 36 more than last year’s allocated number. Staff sergeants in the supply administration and operations field are also looking at more allocations — 30 more for gunnery sergeant this year than in 2006.

Motor transport maintenance chiefs will experience a slight decrease in promotions to gunny, with 17 fewer allocations than the 64 last year. However, Motor T ops chiefs will compete for 56 allocations, 12 more than last year.
