CAMP PENDLETON: Marine Corps officials yesterday presented a Silver Star to family members of the late Sgt. Jeffrey L. Kirk of Baton Rouge, La. The award, the military's third-highest honor for combat bravery, recognizes Kirk's actions during the second battle of Fallujah, Iraq, in November 2004.
When his squad came under fire, Kirk was wounded, but he managed to organize fellow Marines and stage a counter-attack that destroyed a crucial position for the enemy, according to a Marine Corps statement.
Kirk was killed by enemy fire in a separate incident Dec. 12 in Anbar province. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.
