A rookie on only his third day with the FDNY helped rescue a mother and her two young sons from a blazing Brooklyn apartment early yesterday morning, fire officials said.

Asa Flores, 38, and her sons - Abraham, 4, and Abdul, 2- were pulled unconscious from their fully engulfed fourth-floor apartment on Coney Island Ave., fire officials said.

"I saw one firefighter rush out holding a child in his arms. The body was limp. He went by me so quickly. Then another firefighter rushed out with another one," said Elsa Alverio, 49, a friend and neighbor of the Flores family.

Lt. Gerard Curran led Firefighters Chris Deszcz, Donald Wunderlich and rookie Sean O'Grady up the four flights to the locked door of the victims' apartment.

"We forced the door open and were hit with the smoke and flames as soon as we entered," Curran said.

O'Grady, who graduated from the Fire Academy last week and served two tours in Iraq with the Marines, beat back the flames with a fire extinguisher while the others searched for victims, Curran said.

Deszcz found Flores lying in the living room and carried her to Curran. He and Wunderlich then found the two boys in opposite ends of the bedroom, fire officials said.

Flores was in critical condition and her sons were in stable condition at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell in Manhattan.

The fire, which was deemed accidental, started in the kitchen, fire officials said.
