Prisoner dies in U.S. brig in Iraq after assault

BAGHDAD — A prisoner held at a U.S. military brig in Iraq died after being assaulted by other detainees, the U.S. military said Saturday.
Guards doing routine checks Friday morning found the detainee without a pulse and not breathing, the military said in a statement. He was pronounced dead around 5 a.m. local time, it said.
The military said it was investigating. The incident occurred at Camp Cropper, a U.S. military prison near Baghdad’s airport.
Remains of the prisoner, whose name was withheld, would be transferred to his family, the statement said.
