Town loyal to wounded Marine

Loyalty was on display in a big way Thursday in Berwick.

Marine Lance Corporal Derrick Sharpe received a hero’s homecoming — a parade through town ending up at his family home. Hundreds of people came out to welcome back the Marine who was severely wounded in Iraq. The town was loyal to its native son.

So too, the native son was loyal to the Marines and to the country. He was severely wounded. His right leg had to be amputated. Scars mar much of his body. One of his kidneys doesn’t function. He has flashbacks that prompt him to reach for his rifle. Yet he is dedicated to the Marine Corps and says his wounds demonstrate what people will do to defend the United States.

To cap off the day, Sharpe got a proposal of marriage from his girlfriend Amber Frey, who said, “I would stick behind you even if you didn’t have any arms or legs. I would carry you on my back if I had to.” A man’s loyalty is rewarded with a woman’s loyalty.
