Military spouses who want to become accredited financial counselors have until midnight March 31 to apply for this year’s spouse fellowship program.

The one-year distance-learning program will provide 200 military spouses with the education necessary to enter the financial counseling career field. The distance learning program would cost $850 if spouses paid for it themselves.

The Military Spouse Fellowship for the Accredited Financial Counselor Program is offered by the National Military Family Association, the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education and the NASD Investor Education Foundation.

Applications are accepted online only. The associations note that many employers, such as credit unions, financial aid offices, and community housing offices, have an increasing need for financial counseling services. Concern also has increased about the financial education needs of those in the military community, and this program is one part of the effort to address those needs.

Last year, more than 2,800 people applied for the first 200 scholarship slots. NASD Investor Education Foundation officials said a survey in August showed that 82 percent of program participants had changed their own saving and investing habits. Officials said many of the spouses are already providing volunteer financial counseling in their communities, as part of the program.
