Detachment Named After Marine

Local Marines honored a comrade Wednesday who sacrificed his own life fighting for freedom in Iraq.
A group of Marines named their detachment in honor of Bradley T. Arms, an Albemarle County Marine killed in battle in 2004.
Twenty-eight officers were sworn in to the newly established Bradley T. Arms Detachment. It was an honor Arms’ family struggled to find the words to describe.
“I just really appreciate what they are doing here what they stand for and I can't out that into more words. It just really touches our family that we could be a part of it,” said Bob Arms, Bradley’s father.
Arms lost his life in Fallujah three months after his platoon was deployed to Iraq. He is remembered as a courageous son and as a Marine who sacrificed himself for others.
“We were there waiting with the first half of the squad. They had gone next door and fire had started and one of the marines had yelled they needed help so we jumped up and corporal arms was the first one to be out of the courtyard,” said Gy Sgt Dewayne Walters Corporal Arms' Platoon Sgt.
He was the only Marine in his platoon to die that day. His memory will forever be alive in the hearts of those who love him.
“To have moments when we can share his story and recall who he is and what he stood for really touches our hearts and is very meaningful to share it with others,” said Arms.
And his life forever remembered by the men and women who will now bare his name on their Marine League.
The Corporal Bradley T. Arms Detachment is made up of Marines from across Central Virginia. Their hats hold his name and they said they will place a photo of Brad at every meeting.
Corporal Arms was 20 years old when he died.
