The body of an 18-year-old Vinemont Marine was ceremoniously buried with full-military honors Wednesday

More than 300 people attended the funeral of Pfc. Joshua Adam Bailey, who was killed last week in a training accident at North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune.

Bailey, a 2006 graduate of Vinemont High School, was buried at Cook Cemetery in Morgan County. He was given a three-volley salute by Huntsville-based Marines during the proceedings.

“I talked to his mom, Miss Fay, and she said Josh had accepted Christ as his savior,” said the Rev. Pat Sutton during the funeral. “That’s enough to get you into heaven.”

While Bailey’s body was released to his family Monday, the details surrounding his death are not clear. A military investigation into the incident is ongoing.

According to a U.S. Marine Corps press release, Bailey died as a result of injuries sustained during a routine training mission Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Family members said Bailey was run over by an unknown type of military vehicle during mission. He had reportedly been sleeping outside as part of the simulation and was still asleep at the time of the incident.

“We haven’t heard anything else,” said Bailey’s half sister, Michelle McKenzie, earlier this week. “We’re just praying for the young man who ran him over right now.”

According to Capt. David Nevers, a spokesperson for the Marine Corps, it could be some time before the investigation is concluded.

“It’s difficult to say how long,” he said. “In general, these things can take weeks to complete.”

Bailey, who enlisted in the Marine Corps this past May, died days before he was set to return to Vinemont for leave. He was scheduled for deployment to Iraq March 23.

He is survived by his mother, Fay Kilgo, along with nine siblings and half-siblings and a fiancé. He was proceeded in death by his father and a step-father.
