Family and friends of a 30-year old Clifton Park Marine gathered to honor his memory.

Captain John McKenna was killed by a sniper last August in the city of Fallujah. A patrol trooper in Kingston, McKenna had been recently called up for his second tour of duty.

Marines honored their fellow captain at the monthly "honor a vet" ceremony in Saratoga where he was remembered as a tremendous leader and inspiration to his men.

"John was one of those guys that there could be confusion in the room and kind of hate and discontent and John was one of those guys that when he walked in, things kind of settled down. That's the kind of guy John was," Major Peter Merill said.

McKenna was the first Marine from the Capital Region to be killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.
