Two Marines died Friday when a government vehicle carrying five 1st Marine Corps District recruiters veered off the road and hit a tree near Denville, N.J., according to a police department release.

Staff Sgt. Eric Maul was declared dead at the scene, and Sgt. William Pascal succumbed to his injuries en route to Morristown Memorial Hospital, the release said.

Police who responded to the crash found the driver “conscious and alert, moving about from the driver’s seat,” police spokesman Lt. Mike Pisano said. “One of the rear occupants had been ejected onto the roadway, and three other occupants — two from the rear seat area and one from the front passenger seat — were inside the vehicle.”

Sgts. Nicholas Gendron, Glendale Stamaria and Thomas Sweeney were evacuated to the hospital, where they continued to receive treatment for their injuries as of Tuesday, according to Sgt. Kevin Hayner, spokesman for the Marines’ recruiting station.

Stamaria and Sweeney remained in the intensive care unit in critical condition, while Gendron was out of the ICU and in stable condition, Hayner said.
