Service Held for Lejeune Marine Killed in Iraq

ZELIENOPLE, Pa. — The body of a North Carolina-based Marine killed in Iraq earlier this month was laid to rest after a flag-bedecked funeral procession and service.

The coffin of Infantry Capt. Todd M. Siebert was carried under a huge American flag suspended from fire truck ladders in the procession about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh on Saturday. About 60 smaller flags adorned parking meters.

Siebert, formerly of Franklin Park, was killed by a roadside bomb February 16 while he was on patrol near Anbar Province, Iraq. He was 34.

"He was the true meaning of a Marine in the United States Marine Corps," said Glenn Ridenour, Siebert's brother-in-law, reading from a statement by Siebert's wife, Darcy. "He lived and breathed the Marine Corps."

About 280 people attended the funeral at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. Some children had photos of Siebert pinned to their sweaters.

Siebert served with the 3rd Battalion of the 6th Marines and was deployed to Iraq in January after visiting his family at Christmas. He previously spent 10 days in Iraq and had served in Afghanistan in 2001 after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

For the past decade, Siebert had lived at Camp Lejune, North Carolina, with his wife and their 9-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son.

Relatives said earlier that Siebert always wanted to be in the military, often dressing like a soldier in the backyard when he was very young.
