Steady income, discipline and the fact of being in the armed forces are all reasons why Naval Submarine Base Point Loma Commanding Officer Capt. Mark Patton said that Sailors and Marines should take advantage of attending a financial seminar with "Moneywise" television host Kelvin Boston.

Boston, who has talked to service members at Fort Dix in New Jersey and Walter Reed Medical Center will be speaking with Sailors and Marines at the Naval Base San Diego base theater Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. and then to a larger audience at Marine Corp Recruit Depot (MCRD) theater Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Patton is scheduled to make opening remarks at MCRD. He said he wants Sailors and Marines to understand that this is not forced financial education.

"The Kelvin Boston seminar is something that most people pay hundreds of dollars to attend and this is an opportunity for them to get financial education for free. This is sound advice on how to mange your finances and how to plan for your future and retirement," Patton said.

"I hope that the message is getting out that this is not mandatory fun on a Saturday. This is an opportunity to get something that usually a lot of people pay money for."

Patton added that the seminar will include a panel for people to ask questions and interact with Boston on basic finances from opening a small business to understanding a credit report.
