An Alabama Marine who died during a training event aboard Camp Lejeune Wednesday had less than a year of service in the Marine Corps.

Pfc. Joshua A. Bailey, 18, of Vinemont, Ala., which is located 50 miles outside of Birmingham, died Wednesday morning from "injuries sustained during a training event aboard the base," according to a Friday press release that said the incident is still under investigation.

But Bailey's cousin Diane Beesley said Thursday they were told Bailey was run over while sleeping in a training area. Bailey's mother, Fay Kilgo of Vinemont, confirmed her son's death Thursday, but did not wish to comment further.

"His mom told me the (Marine Corps) said they didn't know whether it was a truck, a tank or what," Beesley said. "They said they were going to release his body within three to four days after an investigation."

Bailey joined the Marine Corps on May 23 and was trained as an automotive mechanic, according to the press release.

He was promoted to private first class on Nov. 1 and was assigned to Battery T, 5th Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, the release said.

His decorations include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Bailey joined the Marine Corps right after graduating from Vinemont High School last year, Beesley said. He was a precision machining student who attended a local technical school, according to a local newspaper the Cullman Times.

Bailey had planned to take 10 days leave on Friday to visit his family before a March deployment to Iraq, Beesley said.

"Josh was the best of the best and his young life should not have ended," Beesley said. "Josh is a son everyone would dream of having. He loved fishing and going out on our boat when he visited us."
