Combat in Al Anbar claims two Marines’ lives

IRAQ — Two Marines from the Twentynine Palms base, Lance Cpl. Brian A. Escalante, 25, and Lance Cpl. Blake H. Howey, 20, were killed recently in combat in Iraq’s Al Anbar province.

Escalante died from wounds he suffered Feb. 17.

From Dodge City, Kan., he was assigned as a mortarman with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment. He deployed to Iraq in September.

Escalante was born Oct. 6, 1981.

His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Escalante is survived by wife Crystal, son Aidyn, father Gilbert and mother Rebecca.

Howey died from combat wounds Feb. 18.

Born Oct. 28, 1986, he was from Glendora.

He was assigned as a rifleman with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment. His unit deployed in January.

His awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Howey is survived by father Gregory and mother Audrey.
