Hi, I am new as you can see, but I have a question, I have always heard that when you sign up for the Marines, most times will not get the MOS you signed up for. Is this true or am I being told wrong?

Only if your enlistment is under an "Open contract". Then the corps can put you wherever it wants. If you have a "guaranteed" contract for a particular MOS, you can only be put into a different mos if you fail mos school (your fault). READ YOUR CONTRACT before you sign it. If it does not say "enlisted for the following incentive" whatever MOS or something of that nature, it is probably an open contract. If it says NONE where I showed "whatever MOS" as above, it IS an open contract. READ BEFORE YOU SIGN, if you dont YOU CAN'T COMPLAIN.

You get to pick from an occupational field which you qualify for. The occupational field is a more broad range of several MOS' that fall under the same category. For example my MOS is 0352, which is a TOW gunner. This falls under the infantry occupational field. I didnt pick TOW gunner or have it listed in my contract. I picked infantry 0300 and had that in my contract and then the Marine Corps assigned me the specific infantry MOS 0352 or TOW gunner. Does this make sense?

What MOS are you interested in?

Yes, that does make sense, now I understand it. Thanks. I am interested in 7569 - AH-1 Pilot. I prefer the AH-1W, from what I think I know, it falls under the same catagory?

There are a lot of hurdles to become a pilot.
First, you have to become a Marine Officer.
Then, you gotta become a Naval Aviator.
Then, you gotta win a slot for Rotor Wing aircraft.
Then, you gotta win a slot for the AH-1.

None of this is gauranteed. If this is the way you want to go, concentrate on getting into college. Then after you prove yourself there, you can contact an OSO.

WHOA! Is that in the range of about 8-10 years? Man alive. I just thought that you had to go through four year college for the degree then move on to officers training then flight school. Thanks, that was a BIG eye opener.

Oh and is that the same path for F-16 pilots?

LOL..don't know about F-16 pilots since they're driven by the Air Scouts.

If you want to be a military pilot, it is never too early to start training yourself. The very first thing you gotta be is a serious and capable student. You'll have to be good at math and be able to handle physics.
You should be an athlete and participate in some competitive sports.
You should also keep up on technology with computers and even gaming.
The skills that come from all of these activities are necessary for you to reach your goal.

Count on 5 years for a 4 college degree.
1 year of Officer training.
2 years of flight training.

During each phase you will be challenged mentally, physically, and academically. If you're an A+ student, you'll likely get what you want (Hornets/Harriers/Cobras). B students drive the cargo planes and transport helos. C students drop out and manage the local JCPenneys.

Best advice for now: Concentrate on school and stay physically active. Don't just play PS3 all day. ha ha ha.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! There's a lot of work that goes into it - a lot of kids these days think it's all going to happen for them in first enlistments. Don't worry though - however long it takes, you'll get more than you bargained for out of it.

Big Dog,

When you sign up for the Marine Corps you first sign up to be one of The Few, The Pround. You enlisted for a Program and under those Programs are MOS in which the Marine Corps will place you based on the need.

Thanks, I appreciate all the help. I have noticed by reading these replies that you guys have made, it possible could be out of my reach. I am not doing very good in school. :devious: Which ****es me off because I should and I am not taking it seriously.

Squatting Heifer,
You are young. It's not too late to reverse your academics. You have to want it bad enough.
If you're able to get into college, your GPA starts fresh. If you don't start doing well there, you just don't want it bad enough.

If it were easy...everyone would be doing it.

Are you out cpl because i thought TOW was phased out, the Tow platoon on base had there launchers taken away and made machine gunners. As for the MOS honeslty do well on the ASVAB it an't hard i got a 96 on it just dicking around. If i tried i probally get a 100.

If you go open contract the you will probably get the MOS Landing Support Specialist or MP we are the most needed MOS in the Marine Corps.

Don't worry too much about your high school grades being a deciding factor as whether you can get in the Corps or not - joining the Corps is not like trying to get into a college. It IS important for you to get good grades, don't get me wrong but, it ain't everything in the big scheme of things.

As long as you don't have that same attitude when you go to your MOS school. I don't know about a lot of MOSs but with Ordnance I believe we had to keep a 70 or 80 some odd average to stay. I rocked out my first couple of weeks so I had to be "tutored" (rock study) until it clicked and I could bring that average up. I still have my notebook from then and it's funny when I look at it cause I can tell where I went to sleep................my handwriting trailed off and you can't read anything. It's a wonder I made it through at all.

Two months have gone by... May be too late to write but, my grades plummeted. It was because I was diagnosed with mononucleosis and missed school for two weeks. I missed the last week of the second quarter and the first week of third quarter so I am at all Fs right now. I am not sure if I am going to be able to pass this year. I hope as to what you said Marine84 that your highschool grades are not the deciding factor, is true. I want to be apilot but I am running a few high hurdles right now and am trying my hardest to get my grades up. I still have two years of school left, I hope it isn't going to be three more years. Thanks to all of you for your input and answers.

If you do not know what mononucleosis is, heres a link:

I didn't have all the symptoms listed but the main ones I had were wieght loss and muscle fatigue. And NO I did not kiss anyone.

Cpl Brooks is 100% right. The engineering MOS is CM, and I can't tell you how many people signed up for it and became water purifiers instead of their desired MOS of combat engineer.

At the same time, if they put you where you're "most qualified," I wouldn't have gotten combat engineer out of CM, because prior to enlisting I was a drafter and there IS a drafter/surveyer MOS in the CM field.
