Customers of the Web site MilitaryMusic.com could choose to put this image, believed to be of a Marine, on the cover of a CD of Army music.

A famous World War II photograph of a Marine on Okinawa could end up being the cover art for an album of U.S. Army Chorus songs.

The decision could be made by customers of the Web site MilitaryMusic.com, which has given them the opportunity to vote on the design of a new recording of 26 songs performed by Army musicians. Customers can choose between an album cover with a photo of a rifle-carrying service member running over rocky terrain or a second design that has 20 unit patches and various military badges.

Songs on the album were performed over the years by the U.S. Army Chorus, although it is not clear when and where the recordings were made. The company produces recordings of Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard performances of various musical groups.

Asked about whether the photo that could end up on the new album was of a Marine, Al McCree, president of Altissimo! Recordings, said he did not know.

“The source of the image is the U.S. Army Band,” said McCree, a former Air Force fighter pilot. “Should we decide to use that cover art, I will double check.”

Some of the songs are military standards, like the Army Song, the Battle Hymn of the Republic, Yankee Doodle and the Star Spangled Banner, while other songs are associated with specific units, such as the Iron Soldier March of the 1st Armored Division, the Dogfaced Soldier Song of the 3rd Infantry Division, the Big Red One song of the 1st Infantry Division and Climb to Glory of the 10th Mountain Division.

The photo used on the album cover is identical to one in the National Archives that was taken in 1945 on Okinawa of a Marine running for cover. That photo was shot during an attack in what Marines who served there called Death Valley, a battle that led to 125 casualties over eight hours.

The photo, taken by a Marine Corps photographer, is believed to of Pfc. Paul E. Ison, although others have claimed to be the person in the image
