I believe that the young man "Marine" is sincere but I think that the author made a far reach to consider him as an upper-class that has decided to come down from the mountain to join the middle-class.

He was a headwaiter rubbing elbows with dirtbag movie stars.
(He's rubbing shoulders with America's best now!)

He gets his citizenship and wants to become an officer. OK----what's the big deal?
