JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — The name of a Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based Marine who died Wednesday from injuries sustained during training will be released Friday, along with details about the incident, a base spokesman said.

The Marine’s next of kin has been notified, said 2nd Lt. Craig Thomas. But the leatherneck’s name isn’t being released yet because of a Defense Department policy that withholds names for 24 hours after the family has been notified.

An 18-year-old Vinemont resident, who was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, died during a training mission Wednesday at North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune.

Friends and family confirmed Thursday the death of Joshua Bailey, a 2006 graduate of Vinemont High School.

He was reportedly struck by a military vehicle during a routine training mission. He was set to return home this week before being deployed to Iraq sometime in March.

“The only thing we were told was it was in the early-morning hours, when it was still dark out,” Bailey’s cousin Diane Beesley of Florida told The Jacksonville Daily News, which covers Camp Lejeune.

“He was sleeping when he was run over. His mom told me they didn’t know if it was a tank or a truck or what,” she said.

Officially, the Marine Corps has released little about the incident, stating only that an accident had occurred resulting in the death of one Marine. A press statement is expected at 8 a.m. today.

According to Vinemont High School guidance counselor Melissa Stewart, Bailey enlisted in the Marines this past June. Prior to graduation, he was enrolled at the Cullman Area Career Center, specializing in precision machining.

“Josh was a very sweet, kind and compassionate kid,” Stewart said. “I can’t believe this has happened. He was so very proud to be part of the Marines.”

Funeral arrangements for Bailey were not clear Thursday. A Marine Corps spokesperson stated his body will be released three to four days after an official investigation is completed.

Bailey is survived by his mother, Fay Kilgo; a sister and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his father and a step father.

“He was very clean cut,” Beesley said. “He didn’t drink, smoke or anything. He had to grow up fast since his father died when he was four.”

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- The Marine Corps is investigating the death of an Alabama Marine that occurred during training for a deployment to Iraq.

Officials say Private First Class Joshua A. Bailey of Vinemont died Wednesday morning. He was a mechanic.

Details of his death were being investigated and a Marine spokesman says no other information was immediately available.

But Bailey's family says they were told he was run over while he slept.

Diane Beesley, a cousin, said the family didn't know many details. She says Bailey's mother told her that the Marines say they don't know if it was a truck, a tank or another type of vehicle.
