Policy on condolence letters changed

Unit commanders will no longer be required to submit a proposed family condolence letter to the commandant’s office within five days of a Marine’s death, according to a Corps-wide message.

Reversing policy, Marine Corps headquarters — not the first officer in the deceased leatherneck’s chain of command — will submit a proposed letter for the Marine’s next of kin to the commandant’s office, MarAdmin 113/07 said Feb. 17.

Challenges getting the information from the field prompted the policy change.

“Due to the current operational tempo, obtaining this requested information in a timely manner has been difficult,” the message states.

However, the new policy still requires each command to write its own condolence letter to the Marine’s next of kin within five days.
