Tattoos unacceptable

How many times does a Marine Corps Order have to say, in paragraph after paragraph, that a Marine will present the best possible image at all times, will be conservative in nature, will not be eccentric or faddish in dress, in appearance, in grooming, in accessories, etc., before we begin to see the black-and-white, cut-and-dry issue on tattoos?

"Sleeve" tattoos are not mainstream, thus they are eccentric and draw undo attention ["Hearts on their sleeves," Oct. 23]. Reports of adults having their tattoos removed show that tattoos fall under the category of "faddish."

Some argue that tattoos do not stop a Marine from doing his job. Well, while being a Marine is a way of life, it is a job and not following orders is not doing your job correctly.

People join the Corps to become Marines, which means living the Marine Corps' way. It does not mean you join so you can change the Corps to meet your civilian way of life.

If you find that you can't live within the Marine Corps' standards, then do not be surprised when you do not get promoted and then get out.
