Students and staff at Collins Elementary School in Northeast El Paso sent more than 280 pounds of goodies last week to a group of U.S. Marines stationed in Iraq.

They mailed 13 boxes of snacks, games, toiletries, DVDs, homemade Valentine's Day cards, brownies and Collins Elementary T-shirts to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Golf Company. It has been in Iraq since September and is due home in late April, said Terri Marquez, the school's parent liaison.

"They had a rough start to their tour of duty as they lost three fellow Marines while on patrol," she said. "They are a field artillery unit, so they are on constant patrol and usually, it is at a moment's notice."

Marquez said Marine Lance Cpl. Anthony Trujillo, who was deployed as part of the Marine company, is the uncle of a Collins student. The cost to send the heavy boxes was paid by donations from the school's faculty and staff.

"The Marines should be receiving their packages any day now," Marquez said. "We asked for pictures of them with their pink boxes and goodies, and (modeling) their T-shirts."
