CAMP HANSEN, Okinawa — The awards ceremony on the grassy parade field at Camp Hansen’s 9th Engineer Support Battalion was far removed from the dusty, sandy streets of Anbar province, where eight Marines and a sailor performed the actions for which they were being recognized Friday.

The medals were presented to the servicemembers for actions during a 2006 deployment to Iraq with the battalion. All bore the V device denoting combat action.

Master Sgt. Scott M. Ingretsen was awarded a Bronze Star medal and Sgt. Bryan E. Carter was awarded a Purple Heart. The two also were awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, as were 1st Lt. Matthew R. Bishop, Gunnery Sgt. Darrell J. Covington, Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher T. Grimm, Staff Sgt. Christopher C. Hyatt, 1st Lt. Kirk A. Whittenberg, Staff Sgt. Keith R. Mahon and Cpl. Nathan M. Treichel.

After presenting the awards, Brig. Gen. Peter J. Talleri told the assembled 9th ESB Marines the awardees were “a great example of staying steadfast to the nation’s calling.”

He urged the formation to “use them as an example, as I will.”

After the ceremony, Grimm said he was just doing his job. He admitted that it felt weird to get a medal for what he felt he had done every day of his 14 years in the Navy.
