HAQLANIYAH, Iraq — One Marine was killed and another seriously wounded Wednesday evening when an insurgent lobbed a grenade into a house where the Marines had established a temporary combat outpost.

The attack occurred at dusk in a building across the street from a mosque in this Anbar province city south of Haditha.

The Marines with the 3rd Marine Regiment and Navy corpsmen quickly pulled the wounded out of the room where the grenade landed and administered first aid.

The corpsmen and Marines applied dressings and bandages and an IV was started on one of the wounded.

Moments later, the wounded were loaded onto stretchers.

While being carried out of the house, one of the wounded had enough in him to tell a sergeant to “stay motivated.”

The Marines were evacuated to a landing zone, where they were picked up by medical-evacuation helicopters.

A few hours later, the Marines were told that one of the wounded had succumbed to his injuries.

At least one gunshot was heard prior to the grenade explosion.

The grenade somehow made it into a small room in the house after crashing through a window that had burglar bars on it.

Others in the room suffered only slight injuries.

The death marks the 22nd servicemember from the battalion out of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, to perish since its deployment began in September.
