They didn’t storm Normandy, come ashore at Guadalcanal or raise the American flag over Iwo Jima.

But the nearly 100 camouflage-clad figures who filed into the Camp Johnson chapel Thursday were World War II heroes of a different kind.

These were the first women Marines and this ceremony marked their 60th anniversary.

In November 1942, the 17th Marine Corps commandant Gen. Thomas Holcomb approved the formation of the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve. On Feb. 13, 1943, the women’s continuous active service began.

About 22,000 women served during World War II at a time when society was just accepting women in the workplace.
