Amid hugs, kisses and tears, the Marines and sailors of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 left Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort for the Middle East on Wednesday.
The Thunderbolts squadron, which comprises about 200 Marines and sailors and 12 F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, will join Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (All Weather) 533, the Hawks, which left the air station for the Central Command Area of Response in the Middle East on Monday.

The Thunderbolts have been back in Beaufort for less than a year. The squadron left, on a regularly-scheduled deployment, about a week after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Stationed aboard the Naval aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, the Thunderbolts flew six-hour combat missions over Afghanistan in the months following the attacks.
