Sikorsky opens design center
Cara Baruzzi , Register Staff

-STRATFORD — Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. Monday opened its CH-53K Heavy Lift Development Center, where engineers and subcontractors will design helicopters to fulfill a $3 billion contract the company won from the Marine Corps last year.
The 106,000-square-foot office building is at Dictaphone Corp.’s previous headquarters at 3191 Broadbridge Ave. In April, the Marine Corps awarded Sikorsky a $3 billion contract to build CH-53K heavy-lift helicopters.

Sikorsky will oversee the aircraft development and testing.

The helicopters will be designed at the new center, but manufactured at Sikorsky’s 6900 Main St., Stratford, headquarters and at a second site in Elmira, N.Y., said company spokeswoman Marianne V. Heffernan.

The new center employs about 500 people, including engineers, subcontractors and program staff.

All of those jobs were created last spring once Sikorsky won the contract, but "they were in various locations throughout the company until now," Heffernan said.

The new site, she said, allows Sikorsky to consolidate operations.

"We are proud to co-locate this team of professionals to bring this program to continued success delivering a mission-ready, powerful tool that is equipped to meet the Marine Corps’ unique and demanding requirements," Sikorsky President Jeffrey Pino said in a written statement.

The helicopters being designed at the center are an upgraded version of Sikorsky’s CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter, which the Marines deploy from amphibious assault ships to transport equipment and personnel.

Improvements in the CH-53K include higher efficiency, an upgraded engine system, improved cargo handling, and lower operating costs, according to Sikorsky.

The number of helicopters that Sikorsky will make will be determined on an annual basis, depending on funding allocated by Congress.

The Broadbridge Avenue center, which is about five miles from Sikorsky’s headquarters, previously housed Dictaphone Corp. until that company left in September.

Sikorsky is a subsidiary of Hartford-based United Technologies Corp.
