AXIS - A special group of marines is being recognized in honor of Black History Month.

Wednesday, six men from the Mobile area were honored at the Dupont plant in Axis. They are part of a group called the "Montford Pointers." They were among the first African-Americans to fight in the U.S. Marine Corps.

"They spearheaded blacks into the marine corps without them , today there would probably not be blacks in the marine corps, today we're honoring those guys," said James Thomas who was at the ceremony.

The Marines trained at Montford Point, in Camp Lejeune, and first fought in 1942.
