NEW YORK (UPI) -- The U.S. Army is retiring its old starched and pressed dress uniforms for wrinkle-free cotton and nylon that can be worn straight from the dryer.

The new Army Combat uniforms, which have been phased in over the past two years, feature a new digital-pixel camouflage that is designed to be effective in desert, woodland and urban combat, The New York Times said.

Instead of spit-shined black leather boots that needed constant polishing, soldiers are being issued tan "desert" boots made of suede and synthetic materials, the newspaper said.

Soldiers say the new uniforms are more comfortable, although many aren't very happy with the Velcro strips to attach name patches and other information. Critics say the Velcro can lose its grip after a few washings, causing patches to drop off.
