Emul's family arrives on Saipan

Fallen soldier Adam Quitugua Emul's mom, Angelina, and his sisters have arrived on Saipan to prepare for the arrival of Adam's remains tomorrow, Saturday.

U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Thomas Gagnon escorted Adam's family members all the way from Portland, Oregon, to the Commonwealth.

Gagnon said the family arrived Wednesday night. He said fellow Marines from the State of Hawaii would be arriving tonight at 8:50pm on Saipan. He said these Marines would be conducting the military honors that will be accorded Emul during his interment on Feb. 13.

“It's a very tragic event and part of the Marine's esprit de corps is to support the family in any means we can that is appropriate for our fallen hero,” said Gagnon.

Military Veterans Affairs Office director Ruth Coleman said that Emul’s body is scheduled to arrive at the Francisco C. Ada International Airport tomorrow at 3pm. The reception inside the airport will be limited to family, friends and selected officials.

Coleman is inviting the community to participate in the activities taking place between 3pm and 4pm. There will be a flag-raising ceremony and a vigil, also at the airport, to be spearheaded by the VFW Post 3457, Coleman said.

“We'd like to invite friends and everyone for the vigil at 3pm,” she said. “The governor and I are extremely proud of his sacrifice in the name of freedom.”

Members of the U.S. Marines will also escort Emul’s body to the CNMI tomorrow. The presence of the Marines, said Coleman, means that Adam will be given full military honors during the memorial service at the CNMI Veterans Cemetery in Marpi.

Emul was killed in action on Jan. 29 in Al-Anbar, a province in Iraq.

Emul’s memorial service will be held on Feb. 13, starting at 6am at the Nuestra Senora Dela Paz Memorial Chapel. The funeral cortege will proceed to Mt. Carmel Cathedral at 7am where a Responsorio Service, holy rosary and a public viewing will be held.

At 11am, a Mass will be celebrated, followed by interment at the Veterans Cemetery at 12 noon.

Adam, who was supposed to celebrate his 21st birthday this March 7, was from Tanapag. He was the youngest and fourth soldier from the CNMI that was killed in Iraq. Sgt. Yihjyh "Eddie" Chen, 31, was killed in 2004, while SSG Wilgene T. Lieto, 28, and SPC Derence Jack, 31, were killed in Iraq in October 2005.
