Pendleton Marine dies in Iraq

By: North County Times -

A Camp Pendleton Marine died Thursday in Iraq's Anbar province of an unspecified cause not related to hostilities, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

The Pentagon identified the Marine as Cpl. Richard O. Quill, 22, of Roswell, Ga. Camp Pendleton officials said in a written statement that the circumstances of Quill's death are under investigation and no other information was available Tuesday.

Quill was a mortarman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment in the 1st Marine Division, according to Camp Pendleton officials. He joined the Marines in May 2003 and received several awards, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The death toll as of Tuesday night among American service members in Iraq stood at 3,097 confirmed dead and six more pending confirmation from the Pentagon, according to iCasualties.org, a privately operated Web site that tracks deaths and injuries among coalition forces and Iraqis.

Quill's death brings the total number of local Marines killed in Iraq to at least 322. Many of the deaths have come in Anbar province, the area west of Baghdad where Quill died.
