Camp Lejeune continues to grow, mirroring - and directly impacting - Jacksonville and Onslow County, area military and civilian leaders said Tuesday at the 12th annual State of the Community Breakfast.

Col. Adele Hodges, the commander of Camp Lejeune, made the most direct comparison at the event, sponsored by the Jacksonville-Onslow Chamber of Commerce.

"Seventy-five percent of married Marines live in the outside community," said Hodges, the first of the six speakers at New River Air Station. "(Yet), 25 percent of single Marines and married Marines (with) families live on base."

With the Bush administration's recently released plan to increase Marine Corps strength to 202,000 troops in five years, more Marines are likely headed for Onslow County, Hodges said. She did not know what that number might be, nor when those additional Marines will arrive.
