(Kyodo) _ A U.S. Marines Corps flare bomb was found on a beach on Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture on Tuesday evening, though there is no Marines training area on the island, the Japan Coast Guard said Wednesday.

The bomb -- 47 centimeters long and 8 cm in diameter -- could explode and the local coast guard office and the police are considering how to dispose of it.

At around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, a man living in the city of Ishigaki notified the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters that "a metallic object which has a picture of a flame on has drifted ashore" at the northern coast of Ishigaki Island.

The U.S. forces in Japan acknowledged after the coast guard's inquiry that the object is a flare bomb belonging to the U.S. Marines, according to the coast guard.

The surface of the bomb bears the words "flammable" and "notify police or military," according to the coast guard.

In January, a flare bomb and several paint bombs were found around the Fukuji dam in the village of Higashi in Okinawa Prefecture, an area which the U.S. forces and Japanese forces jointly use, drawing local protests over the U.S. forces' poor management.
