Just two weeks are left to apply for the Scholarships for Military Children program, open to children of active duty, Reserve, Guard and retired military members, as well as children of deceased members.

The deadline is Feb. 21. Scholarships are $1,500. Nearly 3,000 scholarships totaling more than $4 million have been awarded to military children since the program started in 2001, officials said.

The goal of this year’s program is to award at least one $1,500 scholarship at each of the 263 commissary locations worldwide that receives applications from eligible students who meet all the requirements.

Children must be unmarried and under age 21 — age 23 if currently enrolled in school.

Applications can be downloaded at www.militaryscholar.org; further information about transcripts and other requirements is also available. Applications can also be picked up at commissary stores.

Completed applications must be hand-delivered to a local commissary, or sent by mail, UPS or FedEx. Applications cannot be e-mailed. Applications must be received at a commissary by close of business Feb. 21.

Those who do not live near a commissary can find the complete list of locations and mailing addresses at www.commissaries.com. Applicants can apply at only one commissary, generally the one closest to where the sponsor is stationed.

Applicants must be enrolled in, or planning to attend, a full-time undergraduate degree program at an accredited college or university in the fall term of 2007. A grade-point average of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 is required, whether the student is finishing high school or currently attending college. Students must also submit an essay of 500 words or less that answers this question: “You are given the ability to change the outcome of any event in history. What would you do and why would you do it?”

Applicants should make sure that they, as well as their sponsor, are currently enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System and have a current ID card. The DEERS database is used to verify eligibility.

The money for the scholarships is donated primarily by the manufacturers, brokers and suppliers who sell groceries in military commissaries. The scholarship program is administered by the Fisher House Foundation, and every dollar donated goes directly to scholarships
