Six countries have been added to the list of designated areas of eligibility for the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, according to a Feb. 2 Corps-wide message. All but one of them are in Africa.

Marines serving in Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Tanzania and Tunisia may now be awarded the medal, the message states.

According to MarAdmin 129/04, which established rules for the medal in March 2004, Marines must meet one of the following criteria to earn the award:

* Be assigned to a unit participating in Operation Enduring Freedom or Iraqi Freedom for 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days within the designated area of eligibility.

* Engage in combat against the enemy and under circumstances involving grave danger or serious bodily injury from enemy action, regardless of time served in the area of operations.

* Be killed, wounded or injured and require medical evacuation while participating in the operation, regardless of time spent there.

* Participate as a regularly assigned aircrew member flying sorties into, out of, within or over the area of operation. Each day that one or more sorties are flown in accordance with these criteria counts as one day toward the 30- or 60-day requirement.

The list of eligible countries has been expanded three times since the medal’s introduction in 2004, according to 1st Lt. Rob Dolan, a spokesman for the Corps’ Awards Branch at Quantico, Va.

Despite the expanded eligibility, Marines are allowed only one award of the medal, Dolan said. It is also not authorized service stars.
