Admin error briefly awards battalion MUC

The Hawaii-based ground-pounders of 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, don’t rate the Meritorious Unit Commendation awarded to them by a Corps-wide message last week — at least not yet, according to a Feb. 2 MarAdmin published to correct the awards update.
“The award recommendation for this unit is still under consideration, and a final decision has not yet been reached,” the correction states. The original message said the unit will receive the award for actions beginning Nov. 25, 2004, and ending June 15, 2005.
The MUC recommendation is on its way to the awarding authority, Navy Secretary Donald Winter, for final approval, according to an official at the Corps’ Awards Branch in Quantico, Va.
The mix-up was the result of a simple administrative error, and “it only took a few minutes to realize the mistake, which prompted the release of the second MarAdmin,” the official said. “The award is still pending, and we will publish the decision as soon as it is made final.”
