"Local Marine Receives Purple Heart"
WKRN, TN
An area marine, who served in Iraq and was injured by an IED in 2004, got a welcomed visit Friday morning.
Corporal Gene McCollum of Mt. Juliet was given a surprise Purple Heart ceremony by fellow marines.
The marines showed up at his Mt. Juliet home to present him the award.
McCollum never had the ceremony following his injury and never got a certificate showing he had earned the award.
He recently had surgery for back pain due to his war injuries.
